THE WAR COCKPIT
The WAR fuselage was designed with the "average" person in mind. (5'-10" 185lbs) Some of us may have had more wheaties than others and exceed these proportions. One builder who is 6'-1" 185 lbs says he is quite comfortable. It seems that the FW-190 has more legroom than the F4U. This is probably because the F4U's rear spar is arched  and the seat is moved forward slightly.

Here are some photos of me in my F4U. At 5'-10" and 205lbs I fit very comfortably.
From my heel to the firewall is eight inches. The fuselage measures 21" where my shoulders are. My shoulders measure 23" while standing, When you sit at the controls in the plane your shoulders arch.

A closer view. The firewall starts approximately where the bold line for the cowling begins.
Notice the shoulders curve a bit.
My feet have eight inches to go before hitting the firewall. A taller pilot could use a cushion or chair parachute to move his feet further back. I have not yet installed my plywood floor which rides atop the crossmembers.
